Dear Li Ming,
Sincere congratulations on your admission to Peking University! I’m really delighted to see that your hard work has paid off.
Since I am going to take the National College Entrance Examination next year, I hope that you can share some effective methods you used in Senior Three. For example, how did you reasonably manage your time? Sometimes I do not even have enough time to finish my homework. Moreover, could you please tell me how to deal with stress and anxiety? I have been under pressure for a long time, especially when I am not satisfied with my grades. Thank you very much indeed.
Congratulations again and may you enjoy yourself in Peking University! Looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hua

W: Hey Jim, it’s time to wake up and get out of bed.
M: My alarm hasn’t even gone off yet.

W: Oh, it runs every 20 minutes. It should be here any minute now.
(Text 3)
M: What do you think of today’s TV programs, Mary?
W: They’re terrible. Most of the programs are a complete waste of time.

(Text 5)

W: Tim, how much do you think we should spend on furniture?
M: My original budget is $$600.
W: Well, let’s think about what we should buy.
M: Good, that’s really something urgent. I don’t want to sleep on the floor in our new home. That’s the first thing.
W: Just a minute, I’ll get a pen to write all this down.
M: A dining table, and a desk for us to work on.
W: What about just buying one dining table? I think it could be used as a dining table and a desk, too. We can put it here.
M: Great idea. Well, we need two chairs in any case.
W: Yes, two chairs.
(Text 7)
M: I think Steven is the right age to go to school, for both of us have to work and we don’t have spare time to take care of him.
W: But he is still so young. It’s time for him to play. I’ll work on night shift from next week. I’ll be free in the daytime.
M: But he is old enough to learn knowledge from school. It’s your duty to plan his future.
W: No, I couldn’t agree with you. It’s his own duty to plan his own future.
M: Anyway, I’ll send him to school this year.
(Text 8)
M: Hello, Grace. That's a beautiful skirt you have on. Where are you going?

M: Oh. That dress doesn't exactly match the job.
W: Why? You said my skirt was beautiful just now.
M: Yes, your skirt is really beautiful, but you are applying for a teaching position. You see, your skirt is very short.
W: Can you explain it in detail?
M: Well, in my opinion, you shouldn't pay too much attention to your appearance. You should look simple but elegant. Your experience and knowledge will gain the appreciation of your interviewer.

M: What's the main reason you work out? For your health, or to look good?
W: To look good. How about you? Do you get any regular exercise?
M: I do a lot of walking, for exercise and enjoyment -- sometimes ten to twenty kilometers at a time.
W: Well, how about sports?
M: I used to love playing baseball and basketball, but it's impossible to get enough people together for a game now. Mostly I just watch sports on TV.
W: I play tennis fairly regularly with my friends, and sometimes go swimming and cycling by myself.
M: Oh, I forgot that. I go swimming sometimes too.
W: Why don't you join me at the gym?
M: Well, maybe someday, but I'm pretty lazy about things like that.
(Text 10)
Good evening. Do you mind if I call you children? Are you wondering when people will call you an adult instead of a child? Do you want to know at what age a child becomes an adult? In fact, different cultures and societies usually have their own customs to determine when a child becomes an adult. Some cultures might see how well a person performs a certain given task before he can see him as a mature man. For example, in some North American Indian cultures, a boy became a man around the age of 13. At that time, he would be asked to go into the woods alone, without food or water for several days. When he returned safely, he became an adult man. In Japan, young people become legal adults at age 20. Each year on January 15th, they wear traditional clothes, listen to speeches, and visit with old friends.
Most cultures we know today require a person to be a certain age before he can be classified as an adult. In the United States, the passage into adulthood takes several years. American teenagers can get a driver’s license at the age of 16. The legal age of adulthood is 18. However, they must wait until age 21 to buy alcohol. OK, that’s all for my lecture. You are required to write a summary of this class.
