Text 1
W: How do you get to your office every day? Do you walk?
M: Well, it’s too far to walk. I usually take the bus, since the bus stop is just at the corner by my house.
Text 2
W: Could you give me a ride to the engineering building?
M: I would. But I’m late for an appointment on the other side of town.
Text 3
M: Well, I’d better get back to work. I’ve got a ton of stuff on my desk!
W: Me too. I’ll see you after work, huh?
M: Yeah, definitely. I was hoping to catch a ride with you.
W: Sure. Meet me at five.
Text 4
M: Excuse me, could you give me change for a dollar?
W: I’ll see what I have. What do you need it for?
M: I want to get some cigarettes.
Text 5
W: I would appreciate it if you would turn the volume of your music player down a little lower in the
evenings. It is really quite annoying, you know.
M: I’m sorry for that. I didn’t realize I was bothering anyone else. I promise it won’t happen again.
Text 6
W: Michael, what kind of exercise do you like to do?
M: Well, I love lifting weights, and I go cycling every day.
W: What do you like about them?
M: They’re free of charge. They make me feel stronger, but the most important thing is that they make
me feel good.
W: What else do you do?
M: Swimming, jogging...
W: Wow! That sounds great. How often do you go jogging?
M: I try to do at least a little every day. The key to exercise is to do it regularly. Well, what’s your
favorite type of exercise?
W: Walking, I guess.
Text 7
M: If I had a choice to do it all over again, I’d still like to be a boy.
W: Why? I am sure that I would change.
M: Well, you see, now that I have been a boy all these years, I think I would be an even better boy
because I’ve already had some experience.
W: Sounds good. But I would still choose to be a boy. I would like to try living a different life.
That must be wonderful. Can you imagine to be able to do all the things you never did before?
M: Oh, that sounds great. But maybe then you would have a tough life. I wouldn’t like my life if I never
knew what would happen next, with everything out of my control.
W: But I like trying new things. I learn best when I face challenges. Nobody knows anything at the
beginning, right?
M: Well, that’s true.
Text 8
M: Here is the pill. I’ll help you get up.
W: Can I try to walk around the room or corridor? I have stayed in bed all day.
M: Of course you can! It seems feeling well again is not such a long process.
W: I have been in hospital for two weeks, haven’t I?
M: Yes, and you are going to be discharged(出院) from here tomorrow!
W: Really? I’m so happy.
M: I have written a certificate for you.
W: I’m eager to go home! Doctor, what should I do after I go home?
M: I have two suggestions. First, avoid any mental stress and have lots of rest. Secondly, examinations
should be done regularly.
W: I’m sure your advice will help me a lot.
M: Complete recovery will still take a long time. So take care of yourself.
W: I want to thank all the doctors-in-charge. I’m really very grateful to you all.
M: Don’t mention it. That is our duty.
Text 9
W: Excuse me. I think I’m in 18D, next to the window.
M: Oh, I’m terribly sorry.
W: That’s okay. Oh, it’s good to sit down. I’ve been rushing around all day. Are you going to New York?
M: Yes, I am. How about you?
W: Me too. I’m going to visit my daughter. She’s got a new baby boy.
M: Oh, congratulations. You must be very happy.
W: Yes, I am. Have you been to New York before?
M: Yes, I have. I was in New York about a month ago.
W: Oh, so you’ve been traveling around the country. That’s wonderful. Have you been enjoying
yourself?
M: Yes, I love traveling and seeing different places.
W: By the way, where are you from?
M: From China. How about you?
W: I was born in India, but I’ve lived in the States since I was two years old. Are you traveling alone?
M: No, I’m traveling with my wife and a friend. They’re sitting over there.
W: You know, I’ve been to China.
M: Really?
W: Yes, my husband and I went there about ten years ago. He loved to travel.
M: Is your husband traveling with you now?
W: No. Unfortunately, he passed away last year.
M: Oh, I’m very sorry.
Text 10
Mr. Perkins stood at the bus stop and watched the cars go by. Many of the cars were new Beta 400s, and most of them were yellow. Mr. Perkins always wore the same clothes as other men, ate the same food as other people, and did the same things after work and at the end of the week. Mr. Perkins did not like to be different.
The following week, Mr. Perkins bought a new, bright yellow Beta 400. He was satisfied with it, and drove to work in it the very next day. He was even more satisfied with his new car when he saw all the other Beta 400s in front, behind, and on both sides of him.
Mr. Perkins parked his car in a big parking lot near his office, and worked the rest of the
day. But when he came back at five o’clock, there were so many bright yellow Beta 400s in the car-park that he did not know which was his car. He tried his key in some of the cars, but people passing by gave him a look he didn’t like. So he stopped. Poor Mr. Perkins had to wait nearly two hours until his car was the only one left in the parking lot.
