Section A
Conversation 1
W: I don’t know why Jimmy hasn’t come back. Where can he be at this time of day? And it’s raining cats and dogs, too.
M: When was he supposed to be home?
W: Two hours ago. I’m really worried.
M: Has this happened before?
W: Once. Several weeks ago he didn’t come back until about eight o’clock. He was at one of his classmates’ house.
M: That must be what he’s doing again.
W: Well, I hate his staying away like this!
M: I think he’s old enough to take care of himself. Don’t get so upset. Anyway, it’s only 7 o’clock.

Conversation 2
W: The other day a salesman came to my house.
M: Oh, that’s interesting. What was the salesman selling?
W: Kitchen that can cut carrots and other vegetables into all kinds of shapes.
M: How does the equipment do it?
W: I didn’t know either at first. So the salesman explained its functions to me for nearly two hours.
M: So the salesman wouldn’t take "no" for an answer.
W: Right! Finally I bought something just so that he would leave.
M: Do you find it useful?
W: The good thing is that his equipment is pretty useful.

Conversation 3
W: Hi, Tim! It’s so nice to see you. Have you been here for a long time?
M: No, I just arrived yesterday, on Sunday. How about you?
W: I arrived here a couple of days ago, on Saturday. Wait a minute. What day is it today? …Sorry I got here on Friday, not Saturday.
M: But we don’t have to be here till today.
W: Yeah, I know, but I wanted to put away my things and moved them into my room. By the way, have you decided what you will major in?  Still English?
M: No, I’ve changed my mind. I will study history instead. What about you? Are you still studying geography now?
W: Yes, but at first I found it very difficult to decide whether to study geography or biology.
M: Yeah, it’s a difficult choice.

Conversation 4
W: How can I help you, sir?
M: I need a suit, please.
W: We have sweat suits, casual suits, and business suits. Which kind do you want?
M: The last one.
W: Well, they come in three different price ranges. There are on-sale clothes, fashionable suits, and best-sellers.
M: What’s the price range for each?
W: On-sale clothes start at 30 dollars and go as high as 100 dollars. The fashionable suits on the second floor are between 250 and 1,500 dollars. Best-sellers are on the third floor, and they are between 50 and 500 dollars.
M: I can spend up, to 75 dollars.
W: In that case, have a look at both the on-sale clothes and the best-sellers.
M: Where are the on-sale clothes?
W: Go straight down to the first floor.
M: OK. I’ll go there first.

Conversation 5
W: Hello, Tom, what are you going to do after work?
M: I want to buy a gift for my girl friend. Any advice?
W: Is her birthday coming? How about flowers? Girls like flowers.
M: Oh, it’s not her birthday. You know, there is too much work in our company recently; I’ve been busy, and she’s a little upset.
W: I see; our boss is a little difficult to deal with these days and he is always shouting at us.
M: We’ve got enough of him. Stop talking about him. Give me your suggestion on the gift.
W: What about a necklace? It’s expensive, but will show how much you love her.
M: Good idea! I’d planned to buy her a dress, but I don’t know what kind she likes. A necklace seems a better choice.

Conversation 6
M: Have you heard the song I Dreamed a Dream?
W: Yes, of course! And I like the singer Susan Boyle.
M: Me, too! When she sang it on the U.K. reality show, the audience cheered.
W: Susan is one talented little lady! I’m excited about what I’ve heard so far.
M: But I’ve heard that she has never been trained as a singer!
W: Really? But she seems to be talented enough to give anything a good performance.
M: She’s good enough to be an example to us.
W: My mom says she likes Susan’s powerful voice.
M: Look. Here’s something on the Internet — Susan Boyle should consider risking going into the world of rock and roll.

Section B
