Text 1
W: I’d like coffee. What about you?
M: Mm...me, too. And the kids will drink coke. But just ask for one bottle. They’ll never finish about it for each.
W: Orange juice is much better for them.
M: I know, but they always refuse to drink it.
Text 2
W: Does this bus go to the post office?
M: No. You’re going the wrong way. You can get off at the next stop and take the No. 11 bus on the other side of the street. It stops in front of the post office.
Text 3
W: Mike, have you taken any money from my purse? I thought I had a lot more than $20.
M: No, I haven’t. I haven’t touched it! You always think everything is my fault!
Text 4
W: You look very sad today.
M: Yeah. It’s Carl. He was very angry with me yesterday and I was very angry with him, so we had a big row. Now we’re not talking to each other.
Text 5
W: Could you tell me where the railway station is?
M: It’s not far from here. Go straight and you’ll get to it.
Text 6
W: What are you going to do this weekend?
M: I’m going to this area’s finest eyeglasses store.
W: Where is it?
M: It’s next to “Holiday Hotel” on the fifth avenue.
W: Does it open all the time?
M: It opens from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday and it opens until six on Saturday, but it is closed on Sunday.
W: You don’t have to work on Friday. Why not go there on that day?
M: Well, you don’t know on Saturday there’s additional 20% off on all brands of eyeglasses. What’s more, eye exams are free on that day.
Text 7
W: Excuse me, may I ask you some questions?
M: Sure, go ahead.
W: I hear you’re going to put on a new play soon. Could you please tell me what you do in the play?
M: OK. It’s a comedy and the director asked me to play the part of an old professor. We’re very busy practicing these days.
W: How do you enjoy your work?
M: Very much, but we have to practice a lot. We practice the movements, and try to remember the dialogues. We must work hard.
W: Where and when are you going to put on the play?
M: I intend to take part in a film, and also try to work as a director.
Text 8
W: So, what’s your usual day like? You always seem so busy.
M: Well. I usually get up around 5:00 a.m. and work on the computer until 6:00 a.m.
W: Why do you get up so early?
M: Well. I have to leave home at twenty to seven so that I can catch a bus at 7 o’clock. It takes me about twenty minutes to walk to the bus stop from my house.
W: What time do you get to work?
M: At 8:00 a.m.
W: And what time do you get off work?
M: Uh, at 5 o’clock in the afternoon. Then, we have dinner at about 6:30, and my wife and I play with the kids until 8:00 or so, when they’re supposed to go to sleep.
M: What do you do after they fall asleep?
W: Well, my wife and I often watch TV or talk until 10 o’clock. She then often reads while I work on my website. I sometimes stay up until the early hours of the morning, but I try to finish everything by one or two.
M: And then you get up at 5:00 a.m.?
W: Well, yeah. I know it is important to live a balanced life, but I enjoy what I do.
Text 9
M: You look a bit worried. Is anything wrong?
W: No, not really.
M: Are you sure? You are not really looking as normally happy today.
W: Well, to tell you the truth, I’ve been fired.
M: My goodness! I... You poor thing! Well, I just can’t believe it.
W: Well, it was my own fault really. I got angry with the boss. But now I’m not sure what to do.
M: Well, if I were you, I’d start looking for a new job and forget all about it.
W: But don’t you think I’ll find it difficult to get another job?
M: Not for a person with your experience.
W: But might it be a good idea to move to another city?
W: No, never. In fact, I’d rather eat chips than bread.
M: True. Have you ever thought of starting up your own business?
Text 10
M (W): OK. Let’s begin. Hello, everyone. My name’s Karl Roberts. And I’ll be your teacher for this course---Intercultural Communication.
Uh, to begin with, please take a look at the teaching program in front of you. As you all should know by now, this course meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15 p.m. to 4:50 p.m. We will be meeting in Room 311 for the first half of the course, and we will be using the research lab every other week on Thursday in Room 405 during the last two months of the course.
Uh, this is the text for the class---Beyond Language. Unfortunately, the books haven’t come in yet. But I was told that you should be able to purchase them in the bookstore the day after tomorrow. Again, as you see on your course outline, grading is determined by your performance in a midterm and a final test, a research project, and classroom participation.
My office hours are from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Wednesdays, and you can also set up an appointment to meet me at other times.
