Dear John,
My name is Amber and I want to share my story with you because what you've shared about life and positive energy has changed my life. This past year has been one of the hardest for me. I felt I was stuck in a position that had nothing to do with what I wanted to do with my life. In January, after two years of being together, my boyfriend left me.
I read your blog every morning as I drink my coffee at work, but it wasn't until this March that I told myself "no more negativity" as you taught readers in your blog.
Since then I've got into new habits at work to keep my energy positive. When people walk in the front door, I'm the first face they see, so I smile big when I say "good morning" to them, especially on Mondays. Instead of waiting for someone to ask me for help, I offer it with an open mind. The CEO noticed my change and offered me the executive assistant position that I wanted.
One of the biggest things I've taken to heart from your blog is changing my perspective on my job. Yes, it was not an important position, but when I was passionate (熱情的) about it, I could make my life fulfilling.
All in all, I have to thank you somehow for having the passion to help others because it truly is inspiring to me. So thank you so much, John. My life has changed because your words pointed me in the right direction, Take care!
Sincerely ,
Amber

The air quality has worsened in the Chinese capital since Wednesday, causing renewed discontent among residents.
Without rainfall and wind to decrease pollutants, particulate matter(顆粒物質(zhì)) has been accumulating in the air. Most monitoring stations measured PM 10 ( particulate matter smaller than 10 micrograms) at higher than 300 micrograms per cubic meter. In southwestern Beijing's Fangshan District, the Liangxiang station recorded 516 micrograms of PM 10 per cubic meter, the highest reading of the day, according to the Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center. More than 150 micrograms is considered harmful to health.
Beijing has been covered by heavy smog off and on this winter, and the ongoing air concerns are wearing on residents, particularly as they prepare to celebrate the Spring Festival holiday next week. "I almost got choked by the smog when I stepped out of the office building on Wednesday," said Yang Yanli, 24, an accountant. "The smell is so terrible, as though I’m
inhaling lots of coal, that it has spoiled my holiday mood. "
Unlike the smog that hit mostly the southern part of the capital on January 1, the smog in recent days has covered the entire city, according to the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau. Worse yet, it will continue until Saturday, when the wind will pick up and blow it away, the bureau predicted.
The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggests people stay at home to protect themselves from breathing and heart problems caused by heavy smog and people with breathing problems put off traveling if the smog stays. But many people said they had to brave the bad air to travel, especially migrants who are eager to reunite with their families during the Spring Festival.

What is politeness? This sounds like a simple question. In daily life, we often make judgments about what is polite and what is not polite. For example, to offer your seat to the elderly on a bus is considered polite behavior, and to interrupt when someone is talking is considered impolite; to greet someone the first time you meet him in the morning is polite and to stand up to reach for the dish you want at a dinner table is impolite. So politeness can first of all be regarded as a phenomenon, an observable social phenomenon.
What I would like to propose is that as an observable social phenomenon, politeness is something superficial, but to account for what is understood at the surface, we should dig into the depth where different cultural values are rooted.
When being complimented (贊美), an English-speaking person would readily accept the compliment by saying something like "Thank you" to show his appreciation of the praise, but a Chinese speaker would try to deny the truth of the compliment. They both think they are behaving properly. Yet neither of them would think the other is being polite. The English speaker is being polite to the extent that by accepting and showing appreciation of the compliment, and he avoids hurting the positive face of the person who makes it; the Chinese speaker is showing modesty by Denigrating(貶低) himself, ignoring the fact of the compliment paid to him. As has been mentioned, self-denigration has been at the core of the Chinese understanding of politeness for over two thousand years. The Chinese, in order to show modesty, will go to such lengths as to underrate what he himself has achieved and deny the truth of a complimentary remark.
29. According to the first paragraph, politeness can be briefly described as _____
A. proper social phenomena B. being modest
C. showing appreciation D. an observable social phenomenon

A. Chinese speakers dislike being complimented.
B. English-speaking people are reluctant to accept compliment.
C. Chinese tend to show politeness and modesty by denying the truth of praise.
D. Chinese people think highly of British politeness while English people think poorly of Chinese politeness.
32. What's the author's attitude towards Chinese politeness?
A. Objective. B. Critical. C. Optimistic. D. Approving.

Why is it so difficult to fall asleep when you are overtired? There is no one answer that applies to every individual. But many people fail to note the difference between fatigue, physical tiredness and sleepiness, the inability to stay awake. It's possible to feel "tired" physically and still be unable to fall asleep, because while your body may be exhausted, you don 't feel sleepy. To fall asleep, you need enough time to relax, even if you feel fatigued. It's not so easy to simply "turn off". According to Carl E. Hunt, director of the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research in Bethesda, Maryland, most people do not allow themselves relaxed.
Lack of sleep complicates matters even more. Experts say adults need at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night to function properly. When you get less sleep than that on consecutive (連續(xù)) nights, you begin to be burdened by "sleep debt". As sleep debt increases (and functionality decreases) , your body experiences a stress response and begins to release adrenaline (腎上腺素). Now a bad cycle has been created: You experience the feeling of being more and more tired, but your body is increasingly stimulated. "Power sleeping" for more hours on weekends is only a temporary solution. "There is no substitute for getting a good night's sleep on a regular basis," says Hunt.
Most of us, however, don't get the sleep we need. According to the 2002 National Sleep Foundation, Americans sleep an average of 6. 9 hours per night during the week, and 58 percent of adults experience sleeplessness a few nights a week or more.
33. The writer intends to tell us _______.
A. Americans don't get enough sleep
B. what benefits we can get from enough sleep
C. lack of sleep has a bad effect on our body
D. why it's difficult for overtired people to fall asleep
34. Which of the following is NOT caused by lack of sleep?
A. Power sleeping. B. Sleep debt. C. Lack of adrenaline. D. Function badly.
35. From the passage we can draw a conclusion that lack of sleep _______.
A. is so common that it isn't worth paying attention to
B. doesn't matter for it can be solved by "Power sleeping
C. can make it easy to fall asleep when one is overtired
D. may make it difficult to fall asleep when one is overtired

A major source of teen stress is school exams, and test anxiety is not uncommon. When you recognize your teen is under stress, how can parents help your teen stay calm before an exam?
Be involved. Parents need to be involved in their teen's work.
36 What they look for is your presence—to talk, to cry, or simply to sit with them quietly. Communicate openly with your teen. Encourage your teen to express her worries and fears, but don't let them focus on those fears. Help them get organized.
37 Together, you and your teen can work out a schedule in which she can study for what she knows will be on the test.
Provide a calm environment. Help your teen set up a quiet place to study and protect his privacy. Give them a nutritious diet. It is important for your teen to eat a healthy, balanced diet during exam times to focus and do her best.
38 If this happens, encourage your teen to eat light meals or sandwiches. A healthy diet, rather than junk food, is best for reducing stress.
39 Persuade your teenager to get some sleep and/or do something active when she needs a real break from studying. Making time for relaxation, fun, and exercise are all important in reducing stress. Help your teen balance her time so that she will feel comfortable taking time out from studying to spend time with friends or rest.
Show a positive attitude.
40 Your panic, anxiety and blame contribute to your teen's pressure. Make your teen feel accepted and valued for her efforts. Most importantly, reassure (安慰)your teen that things will be all right, no matter what the results are.
A. Exam stress can make some teens lose their appetite.
B. They will only make the situation worse.
C. Encourage your teen to relax. \
D. The best thing is simply to listen.
E. Help your teen think about what she has to study and plan accordingly.
F. Your teen may also make negative comments about themselves.
G. A parent's attitude will dictate their teen's emotions.
